Last week I posted an article on LinkedIn where I gave an awnser to the question: “what should I focus on? Should I go and invest more time in blockchain, Big Data or IoT?”
So, my answer was “Increasing your perception”. While a lot of people liked my post, I’m sure some of you might have different idea of what I mean by perception, let alone increasing it.
Probably you’ve watched this movie with Leonardo Di Caprio called Inception. For the one’s that didn’t, the movie is about hijacking the mind of a CEO through dream sharing technology. Science fiction in our reality right? Not so much.
We share a common tendency and that is that all human beings have thoughts throughout the day, not one or two, no actually 60-80.000 according to your level of intellect.
The bigger your intellect, for the most means the bigger the amount of thought. With this amount of thought throughout the day, you’re constantly being hijacked so to say.
This clarifies my answer; “to become a better developer, you should increase your perception”. Imagine yourself to be not compelled to thoughts you’ve, imagine yourself to be empty, not hijacked but alert and alive. How productive and effective would you be?
I’ve made a summarization of a few things you can do on a daily basis that are in everybody’s control. Of course there are a million ways to enhance perception, but I’m only interested in the ones that are easy to obtain and easy to maintain.
➀ Gratitude: Steve Jobs mentioned it as one of the biggest factors of how he was successful; “You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. “Ofcourse, there are certain things that you naturally love more than other things, but the control/freedom is in the fact that you can make life itself a love affair. You can do this be a daily practice of gratitude, for your colleagues, for your success, for the clothes you wear, the food you are able to eat or even to be grateful for gratitude itself.
➁ Playfullness: Play Ping Pong, make a joke, fun around. There is scientific research that shows that if you’re playful for 24 hours straight, the capacity of your intellect will grow with 200%. Besides the scientific research, ask yourself: Am I more productive when I’m laughing a lot or when I’m depressed?
➂ Meditation: Yoga, Meditation, Standing on your head, Fitness, Mindfullness. Name whatever you want that is Meditative for you, Meditation is being present in this moment. Not in the future, not in the past.
➃ Nature: Nature has a profound impact on how you process emotions and thoughts, it’s a natural way of emptying yourself of the garbage you’ve collected along the way.
➄ Focus: Try working for max. 4-6 hours a day, but do it while you measure productive per hour. Walk when you feel you’re focus is gone, don’t push but allow yourself to focus on your breathing, to focus on your body, focus on the one thing that you’re doing, don’t multitask.
I hope that this receives to you well, it has worked out tremendously for myself.
